Planning your senior portraits in Galveston, Texas?
High school students from all over Texas come to Galveston Island to take their senior portraits. Is it worth it? Galveston offers a variety of historical, whimsical, urban, floral, water and beach areas all within a few miles of each other that makes it an ideal location of senior portraits. Here are tips and ideas that will make your Galveston Island senior beach portrait photoshoot go amazingly smooth and capture your originality.
1. Schedule your session on a weekday if at all possible. You’ll be pleasantly surprised at how easy parking is when the island isn’t crowded and you’ll avoid heavy traffic getting there as well. You won’t have to work around crowds and this will help you make the most of your time as you move between locations. Avoid holidays including Mardi Gras, Easter, Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day!
2. Start off in your nicest outfit but bring plenty of other changes. Galveston can be windy, warm, and humid at times–so you want to arrive dressed in your nicest outfit and take those portraits first while you’re fresh. For girls, bring your makeup bag on location to touch up when you start to prespire and shine. Changing outfits and locations is easy and fast and in a short of amount of time and distance you can have a stunning gallery of images.
3. The area around the Galveston Strand lends itself to a variety of excellent backgrounds and textures. One of my favorite things to do is scout these locations for my clients so we can take a wide variety of portraits within blocks of each other. Galveston is constantly changing so it’s important to know the area and make the most of the historic district as well as the best beach areas.
4. Bright, happy solids colors always look amazing in Galveston. Flowy solid dresses are perfect for the beach. While you’ll be barefoot on the beach, don’t forget your flip-flops to walk out there. Accessing east beach walks or the ones closer to the Galveston Seawall involve less walking so you can spend more time photographing.
5. Download your parking app (ParkMobile) in advance. Set up your parking app so that you’re ready to go when you get to the Galveston Strand or Seawall. This will save you time! Parking is usually just a few dollars but don’t forget to pay it. It is monitored and you’ll have peace of mind.
6. Save your sandy beach portraits for last! If you're wanting to pose with your vehicle on the beach, you'll need to head west on FM3005 and try some of the first public beach access roads. End your session with your feet in the sand and the wind in your hair and then head over to La King’s Confectionery on the Strand for homemade candy, ice cream and milkshakes with your photographer!
Galveston is definitely at the top of my list of favorite places to photograph. I'd love to plan your session on the island! Want to see more of the seniors I’ve captured? Click here.
